5x5 · Advanced

Yau5 and similar, with parity-free finishing. Sub-1-minute averages.

Move sequences on this page are only checked to be legal moves for this puzzle in cubing.js. Treat them as demonstrations of the notation and the method, not as verified algorithm lists.

Yau5

Yau5 is the 5x5 adaptation of the Yau method, and one of the most popular speed methods for the 5x5. Like the 4x4 speed methods, it pairs some edges before the centres are finished, instead of the beginner order of all centres and then all edges.

Learn it from its published guides in small pieces, and drill each new stage before you attempt a full solve.

Turn rate and efficiency

Efficiency matters more than turning speed on large cubes. Look for pairs that can be solved together, and plan so that your hands do not have to regrip.

Review your solves

A 5x5 solve has long stages, so the pauses between them are where time hides. Record your solves on the Practice page and compare the same stage across several solves, rather than looking only at the total.
