5x5 · Beginner
Reduction with fixed centres. No parity. A first solve, about 15 to 30 minutes.
Move sequences on this page are only checked to be legal moves for this puzzle in cubing.js. Treat them as demonstrations of the notation and the method, not as verified algorithm lists.
How the 5x5 works
Each face has a 3x3 block of centre pieces. The middle one is fixed, so the colour scheme is set for you. Each edge is three pieces: a middle edge and a wing on either side.
The plan is the same as the 4x4: centres, then edges, then solve as a 3x3. Because the cube is odd-sized it has no parity.
Rw U Rw' — wide move, top turn, wide move undone1. Centres
Build a 3x3 block of one colour on a face, then the opposite face, then the ring. The middle of each face is already right, so build around it. Use slice moves to bring pieces next to the block and then undo the slice.
2. Edges
Build each edge as three matching pieces in a row: a middle edge between two wings. Put the middle edge in the front-right slot, bring two wings above it, and join them with a slice move.
3. Solve as a 3x3
With centres and edges grouped, the cube is a 3x3. Solve it with the 3x3 beginner method using outer-layer moves only.
