Reduction with floating centres and parity. A first solve, about 30 to 60 minutes.

Move sequences on this page are only checked to be legal moves for this puzzle in cubing.js. Treat them as demonstrations of the notation and the method, not as verified algorithm lists.

How the 6x6 works

The 6x6 is like the 4x4 with extra layers: no fixed centres, four centre pieces in each quarter of a face, and edges made of four pieces. After reducing, it is a 3x3, and like the 4x4 it can have parity.

A wide turn can cover two or three layers: Rw is two, 3Rw is three.

Rw U Rw' — two-layer wide move
3Rw U 3Rw' — three-layer wide move

1. Centres

Build each centre as a 4x4 block of one colour, working as on the 4x4: two opposite faces, then the ring. Check colours against a corner piece, because the centres do not tell you the scheme.

2. Edges

Each edge is four pieces: two inner wings, two outer wings. Pair them in the same style as the 4x4, joining wings with slice moves. Take your time and keep the paired edges out of the way.

3. Solve as a 3x3 and fix parity

Solve it as a 3x3. You may meet the two even-cube parity cases (one flipped edge, or two edges swapped). The correct algorithms use wider slices than on the 4x4 and are not listed on this site yet.
