NISS, premoves, and insertions. Sub-30 solutions.

Move sequences on this page were checked in a cube simulator (cubing.js): they are legal and, where the text says so, do what it claims. Strategy advice is guidance, not machine-checked. Group facts on this page (which moves keep edges oriented, and so on) were checked by simulation.

NISS and premoves

Work on the scramble and its inverse at the same time. A move sequence placed before the scramble (a premove) can make a solution much shorter. Always compare a forward and an inverse attempt, and take the better one.

Insertions

An insertion puts a commutator or a short cycle into the middle of a solution to fix leftover pieces, often cancelling moves at the joints. Each insertion costs a few moves but removes several pieces.

Practising

Practise with a timer set to one hour and write the full solution each time. Review your attempts to find where you lost the most time.
