Solve the Megaminx layer by layer, the way you would a big 3x3. A first solve, about 15 to 30 minutes.
Move sequences on this page are only checked to be legal moves for this puzzle in cubing.js. Treat them as demonstrations of the notation and the method, not as verified algorithm lists.
The puzzle
The Megaminx is a dodecahedron: 12 pentagonal faces, 20 corners, 30 edges and 12 fixed centres. Because the centres are fixed, each face's colour is set for you.
Notation: a face letter (U, F, R and so on) is a one-fifth turn clockwise. The scramble and demo notation use R++ and D-- for the two-turn wide moves: R++ turns the right half of the puzzle by two fifths of a turn, and D-- turns the lower half by two fifths the other way.
R++ D-- R++ D-- U — the kind of moves in a scramble1. The first star
Choose a face and solve its five edges around the centre, matching each edge's other colour with the neighbouring centre. This is the star. It is planned the same way as the 3x3 cross but with five edges.
2. The first layer
Put the five corners of that face in place. Place each corner in the layer below its slot and use the corner trigger until it drops in, as on the 3x3.
R U R' U' — the corner trigger3. The next layers
Solve the second row of edges with the same left/right edge moves as on the 3x3, then the next ring. Finish with the last face by orienting and permuting the pieces.
