Sq-1 · Beginner

Cube shape first, then pieces. A first solve, about 5 to 10 minutes.

Move sequences on this page are only checked to be legal moves for this puzzle in cubing.js. Treat them as demonstrations of the notation and the method, not as verified algorithm lists.

The puzzle

The Square-1 has two layers of 12 wedges each (big corners and small edges) and a middle slice that can move. Only the shape of the top and bottom layers matters for the moves, so you solve in two stages: make a cube shape, then fix the pieces.

Notation: (x,y) turns the top layer x steps and the bottom layer y steps, in twelfths of a turn. A slash (/) turns the right half over.

(1,0) / — turn the top, then flip the right half
(3,0) / (0,3) / — a longer move sequence

1. Cube shape

Make both layers into the shape of a cube layer: four corners and four edges, alternating. If the layer shape is wrong, turn the layers to line up the wedges and use a slash to swap halves.

2. Sort pieces

Sort the pieces by layer colour: the top colour on top, the bottom colour on the bottom. Then place the pieces in order.

3. Equator

Last, fix the middle slice so that it matches. The beginner method uses a few algorithms for these steps.
